How do you define true beauty? God aligned, authenticity.
“Case of the Ex” was such a cultural moment and remains iconic today. What do you remember about filming the music video in the desert? Looking back, are there any details or behind-the-scenes memories that fans might not know? It was an extremely early morning and pretty dark during our road travel to get to the Mojave Desert for the hair and make up process to begin in the early morning hours to ensure we had enough day light to shoot the video. My studded denim vest was not lined by the wardrobe stylist, so on top of sunburn I was being scraped up during every take, to the point of bleeding with sand in my wounds. They eventually had to add moleskin to the vest, which you can spot in certain scenes in the video.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received, and who gave it to you?
A shaman gave me the best advice to just be.
As an artist, what’s been the most liberating decision you’ve made in your career?
Showing up for myself by going independent, learning different skillsets, and investing my music and well being has been liberating.
You have such glowing skin , what self-care or skincare tips can you share?
Thank you. It is truly my diet that plays a huge part because my lifestyle is one of very little sleep and very little stationary time. In other words I compensate on my plate with may fresh, organic, hydrating fruits, and vegetables within my whole foods, plant based diet and vegan lifestyle. I no longer consume sodas or white sugar, and there is absolutely no liquor, no smoking. I don’t have much of a fancy skincare routine, but I do exfoliate cleanse daily with a natural African black soap. I use coconut oil to remove make up and natural, raw shea butter to moisturize my skin and avoid as many products with harmful chemicals including make up.
Your career has spanned so many eras of the music industry — from CDs and MTV to downloads, streaming, and social media. What have been the biggest changes, and how have you adapted through each phase?
All of what you mentioned along with so much information available to us can be helpful, but also an overwhelming overload. Daily prayer, centering and going with the flow, but also just living in my own world, by my own rules & unplugging from all, helps me adapt, adjust and play within the space.
Do you have any pets? Tell us about them!
Jax is our 9 year old Rottweiler whom my niece named in 2016, Jemma is our 11 year old muttigree from the island of St. John, Tango (a girl) is our 16 year old poodle/terrier adopted during my season on dancing with the stars in 2009 while learning the Tango.
Australians have always celebrated your music, with two number-one hits: “Case of the Ex” and “Lady Marmalade.” What are your favorite memories of touring Australia? Second to meeting and greeting with long time supporters, I absolutely loved all of the amazing vegan restaurants, getting a chance to experience F1 in Melbourne with an exclusive tour experience of Team Ferrari’s pit stop, along with skydiving in Sydney for the very first time.
Are there any Australian artists you’d love to collaborate with?
Sia, Kylie Minogue, and Delta Goodrem.
Where do you discover new music?
I discover quite a bit across all social media, but Spotify is my go to to assemble my playlists.
What’s something new you’ve learned about yourself this year?
I’ve learned that I am becoming ultra sensitive to chaotic energies, egos and

Writing makes me the happiest. My favourite scent is Santal by Le Labo. My favourite 3 new artists are Sam Fender, Dijon and MGK. I discover new music through different people who I know have great taste in music, my sister Grace. She is always ahead of the game and knows whats up and coming, otherwise Spotify. I’d love to work with Delta, we’ve been looking to do a great song together for a while. That will be a special time when we finally do something together. The Tesky Brothers are great I'd love to do a real soulful song with them and Cyril is doing some cool stuff in the dance space. You can embrace the craziness and put in some quality time with your kids. You can have fun if you come down to their level. "Walk On" is more about my journey throughout the music industry. The struggles of a kid trying to make it in an industry that kind of makes you feel like you've never yet reached your dream.
